The Fey were present and active at this year's Free Spirit Gathering (FSG). Held in the graceful, rolling meadows of Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, MD, FSG is amazingly in its 20th year already. True to form, this year's gathering exhibited all the energy and playfulness of a 20-year-old dancing in a sunny meadow in late June.

This playful energy has, of course, been with the Free Spirit Alliance (FSA)-sponsored gathering since the very beginning. For the past few years, however, the tone has been highlighted by the theatrically produced, sincere, meaningful rituals produced by an organization known -- rather thrillingly -- as the "Circle of Dark Eros," (CoDE).  This year was no exception. CoDE produced a trilogy of rituals featuring the Fey that increasingly drew the attendees into the mysteries of Litha, of the woods, and of Pagan life in general.  Additionally, CoDE produced a series of light, 20-minute daily rituals held right before dinnertime.
Of course, the gathering is about much more than just mystery and ritual. As the FSG program reminds us, "If workshops are the heart of Free Spirit, then rituals are our soul."  As usual, the workshops were diverse and -- as seems increasingly true -- somewhat uneven.  Experienced, seasoned teachers mixed freely with a few individuals who might have benefited by attending a few more classes rather than attempting to lead. This is not to say that there wasn't plenty to learn and do on the program. Many of the more seasoned of our regional Pagan teachers were, in fact, returning again after many consecutive years of contributing knowledge to the gathering. Many other experienced teachers, however, were sadly absent.
With concerts, dances, and a brilliantly revitalized fire circle, the fun, social aspects of gathering were all quite evident. And, of course, the shopping was wonderful. This year's merchantsÕ row was a good mix of old faithful vendors and merchants new to FSG.
All of this was tirelessly supported, as always, by an all-volunteer staff, many of whom have been working this gathering for many years. From parking to registration to the inevitable need for first aid, everything was attended to with fun, courtesy, and professionalism.
Considering this annual gathering is held less than two hours from Philadelphia, and is accessible by Amtrak (with a short taxi ride at the southern end), it should remain very attractive to Delaware Valley Pagans for many years to come. Check FSA's web site (www.free-spirit.org) for information on this and other events they sponsor.
