Announcing a new Meetup for Delaware Valley Pagan Gardening Meetup!
What: Next Phactory Workdate
When: June 29, 2008 10:00 AM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Meetup Description: Gardeners, time to get dirty! We will be assembling raised beds in the back 2 courtyards. We will need: bags of plain topsoil, or clean garden soil (no miracle grow garden soil, that stuff is nasty!) and compost. I will be bringing my little garden cart, if anyone else can bring a wheelbarrow or cart that would be awesome :)
Carpenters - please bring your hammers, nails, saws (no electric, but we may have access to a generator. Assume we don't though and bring hand tools) And if anyone has untreated lumber to donate, please let us know.
Haulers/builders/woodchucks - there's still some work to do in the front 2 courtyards. Plans are in progress for building a cement block wall over the large entrance, and there's some wood and debris to get out of the way to make installing that easier. But we've gotten down to the bare concrete floor of the back courtyard, woohoo!
Artists/artisans - we'll be wanting to turn the courtyards into a soothing inner city oasis. Put on your thinking caps, and start planning ideas for ways to transform the space from it's current bare brick and concrete. We'll be needing you all soon :)
Please note - with all the construction, you will still need to wear long pants, work gloves, closed, shoes, etc.
And watch for announcements about a pre-work breakfast - See you all next weekend!

Despite heavy heat warnings and multiple scheduling conflicts, we still managed to attract a totally awesome crew for our latest volunteer work day at the DVPN/Phactory community center project! We worked carefully, took plenty of breaks, drank plenty of water, and still managed to clear out the space by the back fence in preparation for building the security wall across the back courtyard entrance.
We also took the usual time for conversations, dreaming, and tours of the site, of course, and even scheduled time to have breakfast together before we started our day of work.
Thanks to everybody who turned up, and to everybody who continues to support this project in any way. Together we will be building this center!!
Of course, if you aren't able to come out and work for any reason, but still believe in our mission, financial contributions are gratefully accepted at http://www.firstgiving.com/dvpn . You can also donate materials, if you have them available. Please contact [address removed] for more information about materials donations.
Our next meeting is on June 14. We will be meeting at 9 am for breakfast at the Hinge Cafe (2652 E. Somerset St, Philadelphia, PA) followed by more work at the Phactory site (1828 E. Somerset Street) clearing and hopefully finally actually gardening starting at 10am. Anybody interested in the project is welcome to attend either or both of these meetings.
For more information, and to RSVP, please visit the Delaware Valley Pagan Gardening Meetup site.
Thanks, again, to everybody involved in helping to make this dream come true!

We had our meeting on Saturday, May 31, as planned, but weather and other factors kept many attendees away.
Fortunately, Michael and I were able to use the time to discuss ideas and share more thoughts about the potential future of the site. I also had the opportunity to see much more of the site than I ever had before. This only left more excited at the potential the space has to offer once we have it secured and start getting up and running.
Our next work day is Saturday, June 7. Hopefully we'll have plenty of brilliant weather and people out to help us that day. We're also discussing some, "fun only," meetups in the neighborhood, just to give DVPN members a chance to see the environment our center will eventually inhabit. This neighborhood is really starting grow and change; a few years from now, we'll be in the middle of a thriving arts community here!
Anyway, more details later. Hope to see many of you on June 7.
Blessings!!

Subject: [Garden_Project] Sunday may 25th - onsite
Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 11:41:18 -0400
From: the phactory(tm) <[address removed]>
Reply-To: [address removed]
To: garden_project <[address removed]>
I will be onsite Sunday may 25th - possibly doing roofing work with
Cory Suter, or at least discussing/planning for it. I have currently
prioritized (with him) doing some patching work on the "connecting
building" roof where flashing has been ripped out, and fixing the roof
drains there. I don't know if we'll actually get it done or will just
be planning for what we need to get it done. I've prioritized this
because the connecting building is in relatively good structural shape
and preventing further water damage to the wood is a high priority.
If anybody wants to come out on site to either help out, or to do
other things (such as doing some measurements of areas to seal off) it
would be much appreciated. The sooner we get the building secure and
sealed up, the better.
Cory, btw, is a long-time supporter of the project. He is a board
member of Paul Glover's Philly Orchard Project, is from the Mennonite
community (and operates a thrift store in Norristown as part of their
network) and also has the sustainable contracting business
BioNeighbors. He primarily focuses on roofing, and has done, amongst
others, Judy Wicks' and the White Dog Cafe's white roof. Today and
tomorrow he should be installing his first green roof in Philadelphia.
On sunday besides helping out and offering advice, he will also be
looking at Dina Richman's roof. He also has a lot of ceramics to
contribute to the project as part of an eventual ceramic mural project
(similar to, or even done by Isaiah Zagar)..
He is also knowledgable about greenwalls and other things and will be
offering advice on this in the future.

We want to send out a big thank you to everyone who came out on Sunday, despite it turning soggy later in the day. We got a lot of work and planning accomplished - detailed maps of the two cleared courtyards, lists of materials needed, and a lot of good discussions on what sort of plants will do well in the courtyard.
We also want to thank everyone who came out for the open house, it was great to see so many new faces!
Moving forward, we're continuing to gather info and make plans long-term for the outdoor space. We'll also be soon publishing the plans for our next work day. Carpenters & builders, be ready to show up with tools! It's time to lock down the site, and start building raised planting beds :)
Watch here and on our traditional email lists for more details over the next 2 weeks.

"Hello everyone!
"Our next cleanup workdate is Sunday, May 18th from 10am to 3pm. As usual, wear heavier shoes, gloves, long sleeves & pants, and be ready for a good workout. We've already cleared a large space in the front, and are working our way back to the fully cleared courtyards.
"Michael will also have an open house during that time period - if you haven't had the chance to see the site, please do stop by!
"I also have some brainstorming for my fellow green thumbs - Since we can't dig down, we need to build up! So, lets hear your ideas for creative wall/hanging gardens, raised beds, etc. I have old windows to use as the lids for coldframes, so we can have veggies growing even in the cold months. And here's another idea - a labyrinth made out of raised planters, with herbs, veggies and flowers growing in them. So, there's a few possibilities to get you started, can't wait to hear what you all come up with!
"We have another call for volunteers - the gate to the courtyards, needs repairing, and we've seen a lot of postings for free fencing materials. But what we don't have? Someone with a truck or other means to get them! If you have a vehicle and/or are willing to help out with transporting things to the Phactory, please let us know.
"And thank you again to everyone for their time and contributions, you people rock!"

Announcing a new meeting for Delaware Valley Pagan Gardening Meetup for the Community Cen!
What: Pagan gardening workday for the community center
When: Sunday, May 18, 10:00 AM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Who should come: Everybody who believes the Delaware Valley needs to have a Pagan community center.
Why: This is our first real opportunity to open our Pagan community center in the Delaware Valley! If you have been following our efforts over the years, now is the chance to transform all of our dreams into reality!
Meeting Description: For this work date, we need at least two sets of workers.
GARDENERS must study this walled courtyard and develop a harmonious plan to tend it, using available urns and other tools. They need to form a collective that exchanges information and oversees that basic tasks are carried out.
WOODCHUCKS are needed to chuck wood: 1,000 huge handfuls of illicitly-dumped trash, mostly wood debris, must be removed from part of this courtyard.
And much more! Want to do something else? Have other skills/resources? Just email me! Thanks!
